As temperatures rise and families spend more time outdoors, health experts are reminding people that sunscreen protection goes far beyond just the face, arms, and shoulders.
Many people unknowingly skip important areas of the body when applying sunscreen, increasing the risk of painful burns, premature aging, and even skin cancer.
One commonly overlooked spot is the scalp, especially for people wearing braids, twists, or hairstyles that expose it to direct sunlight. Experts warn that the scalp can still burn even with hair coverage.
Lips are another vulnerable area often ignored. Doctors recommend using lip balm with SPF 30 or higher to help reduce sun damage and lower the risk of lip cancer.
Health experts also say people frequently forget to protect:
ears
tops of the feet
back of the knees
skin underneath lightweight clothing
The tops of the feet are especially vulnerable during sandal and flip-flop season, while the backs of the knees can become painfully sunburned after long periods outdoors.
Experts say many lightweight summer fabrics still allow ultraviolet rays to penetrate the skin, making sunscreen underneath clothing important during extended sun exposure.
Medical professionals also warn that melanoma can affect all skin tones, including African Americans, and may appear on less noticeable areas like palms, soles, and under fingernails.
To stay protected, experts recommend applying broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher every two hours, wearing hats and sunglasses, and reapplying after swimming or sweating.
Health advocates say proper sunscreen use is one of the easiest ways to protect long-term skin health while still enjoying summer activities safely.
