Music legend is returning to her R&B roots with her first album of original material in nearly 20 years, and she says fans can expect songs that reflect her life today.
At 82, LaBelle told The Root she wants the project to remain authentic to who she is now.
“I hope at 82 that I do age-appropriate music,” she said. “It’s always gonna be something that I really feel that represents Patti LaBelle.”
Her last R&B studio album, Patti LaBelle: Classic Moments, was released in 2005. Since then, she has recorded a Christmas album, a jazz project and expanded her successful food brand, Patti’s Good Life, while continuing to tour and perform.
LaBelle recently celebrated another milestone by co-hosting “Nightbirds: The Music of LaBelle” honoring the 50th anniversary of LaBelle becoming the first all-Black female group to headline the Metropolitan Opera House, New York City.
Despite more than six decades in entertainment, LaBelle says retirement isn’t part of her plans.
“It’s never my last show. I’ll be singing until I can’t no more,” she said.
LaBelle also embraces her legendary status with confidence.
“I have earned it,” she said.
Fans are now eagerly awaiting the next chapter from one of R&B’s most celebrated voices.
