Alabama A&M University junior Natahniel Israel transformed his third summer internship in Chicago’s 37th Ward office into an opportunity for leadership and community service.
The Chicago native served as a youth development and engagement liaison in Alderman Emma Mitts’ office from June 1 through Aug. 15. His responsibilities included meeting with residents, presenting their perspectives during community meetings, creating mentorship opportunities, and observing government operations.
Israel considered seeking another internship because he believed he had reached his potential in the office. Instead, supervisors trusted him with responsibilities that strengthened his leadership and understanding of civic engagement.
An English major, Israel plans to graduate from AAMU in May 2027, attend law school, and become an attorney. His long-term goals include entering public service and eventually running for mayor of Chicago.
On The Hill, Israel serves as executive president of Collegiate 100 and as a University Echo student ambassador. The Heritage Gold and Normalite scholarship recipient credits AAMU’s culture, faculty, and community with providing a place where he could grow, develop confidence, and prepare for strong leadership.
