Alabama A&M University junior Joshua Shanks has been named a 2026–27 Public Company Accounting Oversight Board Scholar, earning a $15,000 merit-based scholarship and mentorship.
The honors accounting major from Montgomery is among 677 students nationwide selected for the PCAOB Scholars Program. Eligible colleges and universities nominate students pursuing accounting-related degrees.
Shanks said the honor represents more than financial assistance because it recognizes his commitment to education and professional development. The scholarship will help him concentrate on completing his degree and preparing to become a certified public accountant, business leader and, ultimately, a CEO.
Expected to graduate in May 2028, Shanks is an AAMU Merit Academic Scholar and Thurgood Marshall College Fund/Deloitte Foundation Accounting Scholarship recipient. He belongs to the Honors Program and National Association of Black Accountants and serves as treasurer for the University Echoes Student Ambassadors.
A third-generation Bulldog, Shanks credits Alabama A&M faculty, mentors and the Montgomery Alumni Chapter with supporting his growth. He hopes to use his accounting expertise to strengthen financial literacy and expand access to financial knowledge in underserved communities.
