HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – A new illuminated sculpture is bringing public art, civic pride, and community identity together at John Hunt Park.

The City of Huntsville and Arts Huntsville officially unveiled SkyLume on May 13 during the Huntsville City Football Club match at Joe Davis Stadium. The 60-foot sculpture now stands at the roundabout entrance to the stadium and festival grounds, creating a bold gateway to one of the city’s busiest recreation and event destinations.

Designed by Indianapolis-based artist Adam Buente of Project One Studio, SkyLume is made with painted steel and aluminum, kinetic elements, and programmable lighting. During the day, wind-responsive pieces create motion and reflection. At night, the lighting brings the sculpture to life with changing colors and patterns.

Buente said the work explores ‘gravitational pull, community connection and forward momentum,’ with a central ribbon symbolizing a force that draws people in and an encircling ribbon reflecting community energy.

Mayor Tommy Battle said John Hunt Park is where children compete, families gather, and Huntsville hosts major championship events. He described SkyLume as a beacon for everything happening at the park.

Arts Huntsville Executive Director Allison Dillon-Jauken said the sculpture gives the park a defining landmark and a sense of place unique to Huntsville.

The project is the largest public art commission Arts Huntsville has managed for the city. It was selected through a competitive process that included nearly 100 international artist candidates.
