Rebuild Alabama funds are headed to multiple North Alabama road and drainage projects in the latest grant round.

North Alabama communities are part of the latest round of Rebuild Alabama funding, as Gov. Kay Ivey announced more than $7.6 million in state grants for 26 local road projects across Alabama. The first round of the 2026 Annual Grant Program includes projects in Cullman County, DeKalb County, Jackson County, and Lauderdale County. According to the official project list, Cullman County received $350,000 for resurfacing County Road 1659; Henagar received $250,000 for resurfacing Andrew Lee Drive; Langston received $350,000 for resurfacing seven streets; and Lauderdale County received $250,000 for replacing drainage structures at 13 sites. State officials say local governments are contributing nearly $1.94 million in matching funds statewide.

Infrastructure stories do not always get the same attention as ribbon cuttings or industrial announcements, but these grants often shape everyday life more directly than many headline-grabbing projects. Better roads and drainage affect school travel, emergency response, freight movement, access to jobs, and the condition of neighborhoods that residents use every day. The governor’s office says the full 2026 program will award $15 million, which is $5 million above the minimum required under the Rebuild Alabama Act. For North Alabama, the latest awards show that smaller resurfacing and drainage projects remain central to regional growth, especially in communities that need reliable transportation links but do not always generate the biggest economic development headlines. When local leaders talk about opportunity, these are the public works investments that often determine whether that opportunity actually reaches people where they live.
