HUNTSVILLE — High school students across Huntsville have a little more time to apply for one of the city’s most competitive youth leadership programs.
The City of Huntsville has extended the application deadline for the 2026-2027 Mayor’s Youth Advisory Council (MYAC) to Friday, May 1, at 10 p.m. The program is open to rising high school freshmen through seniors who live and attend school within Huntsville city limits.
MYAC is a yearlong leadership and civic engagement program that gives students hands-on experience with City operations, direct access to civic leaders, and a real role in elevating youth perspectives in municipal decision-making. Past cohorts have toured city departments, participated in budget discussions, and engaged directly with elected officials and department heads.
To apply, students must submit a completed application, at least one letter of recommendation, an official or unofficial transcript verifying cumulative GPA, and parent or guardian consent if under 18.
Dr. Randy Barbour, Jr., director of the City’s Office of Multicultural Affairs, encouraged students not to let the opportunity pass. “This program empowers young people to learn how their city works and to meaningfully shape the community around them,” Barbour said. “We hope this additional time allows even more students to apply.”
For Black students and young people from underserved communities, MYAC offers access to civic networks and leadership experience that can open doors for years to come. The program is free and city-funded.
