SPEAKIN’ OUT NEWS

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. — A new high-tech weapon unveiled in Huntsville could change the future of warfare—by dramatically lowering the cost of defense.
AeroVironment introduced its Locust X3 anti-drone laser system, capable of taking down enemy drones for less than $5 per shot—compared to traditional missile systems that can cost millions.
The announcement came during the AUSA Global Force conference, where defense leaders gathered to explore the next generation of military technology. As drones become more common on modern battlefields, experts say the cost of stopping them has become a growing concern.
“We’re spending millions of dollars on missiles to shoot down a $20,000 drone,” said John Garrity, vice president of directed energy systems. “Regardless of whether or not we kill that drone, we’re losing the economics of warfare.”
The Locust X3 system uses a high-energy laser, powered by electricity, to detect, track, and eliminate aerial threats. Equipped with artificial intelligence and designed for flexibility, the system can be mounted on military vehicles and adapted for various missions.
“This is effectively just the cost of power generation going into the system,” Garrity added, highlighting the long-term savings and sustainability of laser-based defense.
The technology is part of the Army’s push for more efficient and scalable defense systems, with AeroVironment positioning the Locust X3 as a contender in future military programs.
Huntsville’s role in this innovation is no coincidence. As a hub for defense and aerospace, the city continues to lead in developing solutions to evolving global threats.
With additional investments and production expanding locally, including new counter-drone systems from other companies, North Alabama remains at the center of the nation’s defense future.
Because in today’s battlefield, innovation isn’t just power—it’s survival.
