Huntsville’s premier youth fishing competition returns next month with enhanced prize offerings, drawing young anglers from across North Alabama to one of the region’s most anticipated outdoor events.
The Wally Vess Youth Fishing Rodeo, scheduled for Saturday, June 6, from 7-10 a.m. at Brahan Spring Park Lagoon, features more than 700 pounds of farm-raised catfish stocked specifically for the competition, including 20 specially tagged fish carrying cash prizes totaling $2,900, with one grand prize catch worth $1,000.
Buster’s Bait and Tackle leads a coalition of local business sponsors supporting the free community event, which targets children ages 6 through 12. The sponsorship model reflects growing recognition among Huntsville retailers of youth programming as both community service and long-term market development.
“The Wally Vess Youth Fishing Rodeo is a valued community tradition, and it’s one we are proud to host each year,” said Parks & Recreation Director James Gossett. “The event is a great opportunity for kids to get outdoors, enjoy time with family, and experience the classic fun of fishing.”
The tournament format requires participants to independently hook and reel in their catches, though adult assistance with baiting and fish handling is permitted. Online pre-registration is encouraged through the city’s recreation portal, though on-site registration will be available the morning of the event. Only registered anglers who have officially checked in will be eligible to claim tagged fish prizes. Awards ceremonies follow at 10:30 a.m.
Brahan Spring Recreation Center offers preparatory clinics on three consecutive Saturdays in May — the 16th, 23rd, and 30th — from 9-10 a.m. The Get Fishing Rodeo Ready program provides hands-on instruction for ages 6-12, with limited enrollment and advance registration required.
