Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated International Program theme is “Exemplifying Excellence Through Sustainable Service”. Women’s Healthcare and Wellness is one of the sorority’s international targets. The goal, during October, in recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, is to provide an opportunity for women and men to learn more about detection, screening and preventive measures associated with breast cancer. Although breast cancer disproportionately affect women more than men, men are not excluded from this disease.
Rho Chi Omega Chapter, recently hosted a community Breast Cancer Awareness event, in the parking lot of the First Seventh – Day Adventist Church. The organization’s Women’s Healthcare and Wellness Committee Chairman, LaShawn Gardner and the Breast Cancer Awareness Committee Chairman, Phyllis Looney-Jones made arrangements for the Huntsville Hospital Breast Cancer Mobile to be onsite for the event. Sandy Cross, who is a nurse and the coordinator for the Breast Cancer Mobile, shared valuable information. Sorority members, members of the church and women and men from the neighboring community made their way to the pink RV to learn more about this disease. A model of a hand held breast was also available so that women could learn how to properly perform a self-exam.
