Huntsville’s new “Paws in the Park” series will give residents opportunities to walk shelter dogs and meet potential pets during two November events. Hays Nature Preserve and Indian Creek Greenway will host the outings, which combine outdoor activity with opportunities to connect shelter dogs with families.

HUNTSVILLE — A walk through the park could help a shelter dog find a home.

Huntsville Animal Services and Healthy Huntsville are launching “Paws in the Park,” a series pairing outdoor exercise with opportunities to meet adoptable dogs.

The free events run from 8–11 a.m. November 7 at Hays Nature Preserve and November 14 at Indian Creek Greenway.

Participants may bring their own dogs or walk a shelter dog along a marked, one-mile round-trip route. All dogs must be leashed, and groups must include an adult age 19 or older. Walkers completing the route will receive a commemorative gift.

“These walks are about connection – with nature, our parks, our pets, and our community,” Animal Services Director John Fischer said in the city’s October 26 release.

Organizers say the outings give shelter dogs a break while letting families meet potential pets in a calmer setting. Families can also introduce their current dogs to a possible companion before deciding whether to adopt.
