OWENS CROSS ROADS — Rivertree Church welcomed military veterans for a gathering of recognition and fellowship during “Welcome Home! Honoring Our Veterans” on Thursday, October 22, 2026.

The program featured speakers who shared perspectives on war, service, sacrifice, and finding a home.

Thanh Duong Boyer, born in South Vietnam, shared her journey from fleeing the country during the North Vietnamese invasion to eventually settling in North Alabama. Her book, “The Ground Kisser,” chronicles that experience.

Retired Army Command Sgt. Maj. Charlie Miller II, a United States Army Ordnance Hall of Fame member and Alabama’s 2022 Vietnam Veteran of the Year, addressed attendees. As a platoon sergeant in Vietnam, Miller served in a critical supply role, helping keep gunships flying and fellow soldiers equipped. He is a past president of Vietnam Veterans of America’s Huntsville Chapter 1067.

Retired Army Capt. Medal of Honor recipient Gary Michael Rose rounded out the program. A Special Forces medic in Vietnam, Rose braved enemy fire to provide lifesaving care, shielding wounded soldiers with his body and continuing to help others while refusing evacuation himself.

Veterans attending expressed appreciation for the recognition and fellowship, closing the gathering with gratitude and connection.
