HUNTSVILLE, Ala.—Two prominent Black congregations in Huntsville are helping residents confront bereavement through grief-support programs offering Christian encouragement, practical guidance, and connections with people who understand the pain of losing a loved one.
Union Chapel Missionary Baptist Church, led by Pastor O. Wendell Davis, will hold Grief Support sessions Sunday, September 20, and Sunday, September 27, at 2 p.m. in Room 17. St. Mark Baptist Church, led by Elder Jeremiah Chester, is reaching grieving residents through an online program meeting Tuesdays at 6:30 p.m. Central Time. The Huntsville GriefShare directory lists the session as continuing through November 24. St. Mark is located at 6475 Moores Mill Road NE, Huntsville. GriefShare combines educational videos, guided conversations, and personal reflection. Topics may include loneliness, sadness, anger, regret, household changes, questions about God, and developing hope after loss. Participants may listen without being pressured to share before they are ready.
The churches offer different avenues to care. Union Chapel’s meetings provide face-to-face fellowship, while St. Mark’s virtual format may assist older adults, caregivers, residents with limited transportation, and people more comfortable participating from home.
Black churches have historically served as spiritual anchors and community-care institutions. By addressing grief beyond the funeral service, these congregations acknowledge that bereavement can continue affecting families for months or years.
Church-based support does not replace professional mental-health treatment when clinical assistance is needed. However, it can reduce isolation while providing compassionate fellowship, useful information, and faith-centered encouragement.
