Country Living named Waverly, Alabama, one of America’s best small towns for 2026. Shops, restaurants, live music, and Southern hospitality helped place Waverly on the national travel list.

A tiny Alabama town with fewer than 200 residents and no traffic lights is suddenly getting national attention after being named one of the best small towns in America by Country Living.

The magazine recently included Waverly on its list of “America’s 10 Best Small Towns for 2026,” praising the east Alabama community for its Southern hospitality, creative culture, local restaurants, shopping, and live music scene.

Located near Auburn University, Waverly was recognized for attractions like Wild Flour Bakery, Fig & Wasp, Fern + Johnson Mercantile, and Standard Deluxe — a popular arts and music venue that hosts concerts, yoga classes, and community events.

Country Living described Waverly as a “blink-and-you’ll-miss-it railroad town” that delivers “an outsized dose of Southern hospitality” despite covering only about three square miles.

The publication also praised The Waverly Local for its Southern-inspired menu featuring dishes such as bacon-wrapped okra and pork hash.

Waverly was the only Alabama town selected for the national list, joining destinations from states including Texas and Virginia.

Residents and local business owners say the recognition shines a spotlight on the charm and creativity of Alabama’s smaller communities, many of which are becoming increasingly popular with travelers seeking unique dining, arts, and cultural experiences outside major cities.

For longtime visitors, however, Waverly’s appeal is nothing new — it’s simply one of Alabama’s hidden treasures finally receiving national recognition.
