Governor Ivey Calls Special Session on Redistricting After Supreme Court Ruling — Economic Stakes Are Real

Governor Kay Ivey has called a special legislative session after Supreme Court ruling in May 2026.

Governor Kay Ivey has called Alabama lawmakers back to Montgomery for a special legislative session on redistricting — and for communities across the state, the stakes extend well beyond politics.

Governor Ivey convened the special session after the U.S. Supreme Court handed down a decision against race-drawn congressional districts in Alabama, according to Alabama Daily News reporting published May 1, 2026. The ruling requires the state to redraw its congressional map, setting up a politically charged process that will determine the shape of Alabama’s representation in Washington for the next decade.

For Black communities, minority entrepreneurs, and underserved residents in Montgomery, Mobile, Huntsville, and across the Black Belt, congressional district boundaries are not abstract — they determine which communities have effective representation to advocate for federal funding, infrastructure investment, health care resources, and small business contracting opportunities.

Economic development advocates note that districts with stronger minority representation have historically been better positioned to champion federal appropriations for workforce development, HBCU funding, historically underutilized business (HUB) zone designations, and Community Development Block Grants that reach into economically challenged communities.

Civic leaders and business organizations across Alabama are closely monitoring the special session process, with particular attention to whether the redrawn maps will give Black communities meaningful political representation — or once again dilute their electoral influence in ways that ultimately limit their economic and civic power. Organizations, including Alabama’s NAACP chapters, are expected to closely scrutinize the new maps before and after their legislative approval.
