HICKORY, N.C. — A North Carolina community is mourning the loss of 7-year-old  Abel Friday-Williams, remembered by loved ones as a brave young boy who may  have lost his life trying to save a friend.

Authorities say the tragic incident happened last Wednesday near a waterfall close  to Bruce Meisner Park. Abel had gone to the area with a friend and an adult when  he entered the water. Deputies believe he may have gone in to help his friend,  though the exact details remain under investigation.

Officials are also reviewing whether proper supervision was in place at the time.

Family members returned to the site to honor Abel’s life and courage. “It breaks  my heart because he saved his friend and lost his [life],” a loved one shared. “He  went in behind his friend to save his life and lost his.”

The area where the drowning occurred is not part of the official park and is owned  by a wastewater treatment facility. City leaders say it was never intended for public  access, but residents note that people frequently visit the site, unaware of the  dangers.

Local concerns have grown following the tragedy. One resident described how  slippery rocks and hidden hazards make rescues difficult, calling the area  “terrifying.”

The mayor of Hickory said the city will review the site and consider additional  safety measures.

As the community grieves, Abel is being remembered not just for his loss but for  his courage and selflessness.
