BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — A University of Alabama at Birmingham football player was taken into custody Saturday after allegedly stabbing two teammates just hours before the Blazers were scheduled to take the field for their final home game of the season.
The incident occurred early Saturday morning inside the Football Operations Building on UAB’s campus. The university confirmed that two players were injured and transported for treatment. Interim head coach Alex Morton said both victims were in stable condition as of Saturday afternoon.
“This was an extremely difficult day for our program,” Mortensen said during his postgame news conference. He noted that while some players chose not to participate following the traumatic event, the team ultimately decided to play to honor its graduating seniors.
Authorities identified Daniel Mincey, a redshirt freshman offensive lineman, as the player arrested in connection with the attack. Jefferson County Jail records show Mincey was booked Saturday afternoon on charges of aggravated assault and attempted murder. UAB officials declined to confirm Mincey’s involvement, citing the ongoing investigation.
Mincey, a 6-foot-4 lineman from Pompano Beach, Florida, transferred to UAB in May after a previous stint at the University of Kentucky. It was not immediately clear whether he has secured legal representation, and efforts to reach his family for comment were unsuccessful.
Mortensen said the team attempted to maintain normal game-day routines despite the emotional shock. Counseling services have been made available to players and staff.
“We’re focused on supporting our players and making sure they have the resources they need,” Mortensen said, declining to provide additional details due to the active investigation.
The tragedy cast a somber shadow over the Blazers’ matchup against the University of South Florida. UAB went on to lose 48–18, falling to 3–8 overall and 1–6 in American Athletic Conference play. The team’s final game of the season is scheduled for Nov. 29 at Tulsa.
UAB officials say additional information will be released as investigators continue to gather details about the stabbing.
