Scriptural text: EZEKIEL 47: 47: 1-12
KEY VERSE: “Fruit trees of all kinds will grow on both banks of the river. Their leaves will not wither, nor will their fruit fail. Every month, they will bear fruit, because the water from the sanctuary flows to them. Their fruit will serve for food and their leaves for healing. (Ezekiel 47:12 ), NIV)
INTRODUCTION: Ezekiel received this vision while the Israelites were in Babylonian exile, a time of profound national and spiritual crisis. The Temple in Jerusalem had been destroyed, and with it, the f the visible center of their religious life. This historical context makes the vision of a new temple with healing waters particularly meaningful. The river flowing from the temple represents God’s presence extending beyond the whole land.
A BEAUTIFUL HOPE. This fourth and final vision in Ezekiel’s prophecy contains a vision of hope, prosperity, and God’s promise of a brighter day ahead. His vision also put forth a new hope for the future work of rebuilding the Temple of Jerusalem. Additionally, it included rebuilding the life of the people of God in their homeland. Some have described this vision as a piece of “pictorial theology.” God’s unfailing promises are rays of hope that can sustain those who believe His Word.
Ezekiel’s vision of the River of Life (Ezekiel 47:1-5).
Flowing water usually represents life. Stagnant water is indicative of death. In his vision, the river represented the restoration of the environment, including the land. It also symbolized the restoration of the exiles’ relationship with God. Thus, the flowing river speaks of new life in God. No, God had not forgotten His people. He was ready to bring them back into a relationship with Himself. This demonstration of God’s power to turn a trickle of water into a river conveys God’s power to bring new life of what initially seemed to be something of such little significance.
Seeing and Sensing a Restored Humanity. (47: 6-7). The sight of a trickle of water turning into a vigorous, fast-paced river had Ezekiel looking on in amazement.
Both sides of the overflowing stream were lined with dense groves of trees. This river was a transforming force that brought Fertilization of the land, implying the sustaining of life in abundance. The numerous trees are defined as “fruit trees” that will be full of life and bear new fruit every month to feed the population. The leaves will be for healing. Ezekiel’s vision includes the restoration and fertilization of the people of God.
