Several significant developments will be up for discussion at the upcoming Huntsville Planning Commission meeting, including an expansion of the Greenbrier Preserve, the Huntsville Ice Sports Center, and a 701-unit apartment complex. The meeting is scheduled for Tuesday at 5 p.m. in the City Council Chambers at City Hall, where the commission will vote on these items.

Greenbrier Preserve Development

The Greenbrier Preserve development, located in the Limestone County portion of Huntsville, continues to expand. Plans for over 1,100 homes in the area are underway, with the commission granting final approval for 90 lots in December. On the agenda for Tuesday’s meeting is final approval for 42 additional lots in the Heritage Park section, part of the development’s first phase. Heritage Park will be located on the eastern side of the development’s southern portion and will feature courtyard houses. Enfinger Development’s Olly Orton has stated that the homes will be priced for various income levels. The development, near major employers such as Mazda Toyota Manufacturing and Amazon, is expected to provide significant housing options in the area. Work has already started on previously approved lots, and no public hearing is planned for the new 42 lots.

Huntsville Ice Sports Center Expansion

The Huntsville Ice Sports Center, located at 3185 Leeman Ferry Road, is set for a major expansion. The commission will vote on the location, character, and scope of the proposed expansion after receiving a presentation from ArcSpace Studio and JM Phillips Engineering, LLC. The city approved a $1.6 million contract for the expansion, which includes a third full-sized hockey rink, along with seating, locker rooms, and a smaller fourth sheet dedicated to curling. The expansion will help attract more tournaments while also offering additional day-to-day recreational opportunities. The curling rink will feature five dedicated lanes. A public hearing will be held during the meeting.

New Apartment Complex on Martin Road

A 701-unit apartment complex, the Martin Road Apartments, is also up for approval. The complex will be located south of Martin Road and west of Zierdt Road. The developer, BPC AL Martin Huntsville Phase 1, LLC, has partnered with Johnson & Associates as the engineer. No public hearing is scheduled before the vote on this item.

These developments represent a continued effort to meet Huntsville’s growing demand for housing, recreational facilities, and commercial opportunities.
