HUNTSVILLE, Ala. — Oakwood University’s Jazz Ensemble was the featured group in Valley Conservatory’s November 1 Lyceum Concert Series announcement, placing university musicians on the program at its Hampton Cove recording studio.
The Sunday concert was scheduled for 5 p.m., with doors opening at 4:30 p.m., at 5732 U.S. 431 South in Brownsboro. Admission was advertised at $10, payable in cash at the door.
Valley Conservatory described the program as “an exciting musical performance celebrating the energy and artistry of jazz,” framing the evening around the ensemble’s musicianship and the opportunity to experience live music locally.
The Lyceum Series has a longstanding connection to Oakwood. According to the conservatory’s history, the series was established in 1999, and its first concert took place April 12, 2001, on Oakwood’s campus. That program featured the Trillium Trio and Valley Conservatory Chamber Ensemble.
The series combines concerts with master classes, lectures, and other arts programming. Its stated goals include connecting students with performing artists, supporting mentorship and encouraging interaction between musicians and audiences.
Oakwood’s music department also places performance within its educational mission. The university’s catalog describes degree pathways in music, composition and recording arts, vocal performance and pedagogy, and other areas, alongside ensemble and recital requirements.
Together, those institutional commitments provide context for the November concert listing: university music education meeting a community venue devoted to cultural enrichment.
Valley Conservatory’s broader outreach includes workshops, festivals, and collaborative performances throughout the Huntsville area. Information about its concert programs and recording studio is available by calling 256-534-3131.
