SPEAKIN’ OUT NEWS

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. — A confirmed measles case involving an international traveler has prompted Alabama health officials to warn residents about possible exposure at two Huntsville businesses.
The Alabama Department of Public Health announced the case October 13, following a positive laboratory test.
Officials identified possible exposure at Subway, 7900 Bailey Cove Road, October 4–6, between approximately 11:30 a.m. and 3 p.m.
Another possible exposure occurred at Publix, 12796 Bailey Cove Road Southeast, October 4, between 1 and 3 p.m.
Residents who visited these locations during the identified periods are encouraged to review vaccination records and monitor for symptoms.
Measles is highly contagious and spreads through the air. Symptoms include fever, coughing, runny nose, red eyes and a rash.
Serious complications can include pneumonia and brain inflammation, particularly among vulnerable individuals.
Health officials emphasize that the measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccine provides strong protection.
Children generally receive two doses, beginning at 12–15 months and again at ages 4–6.
Adults unsure of their vaccination status should consult their healthcare provider.
Anyone experiencing possible measles symptoms should call ahead before seeking medical care to prevent additional exposure.
