Swipe Right or Seek God? What the Bible Says About Dating Apps

By SPEAKIN’ OUT NEWS

Many Christians are turning to dating apps to meet potential spouses, but pastors encourage believers to seek God’s wisdom, pursue purity and prioritize spiritual compatibility over convenience when building relationships.

Dating apps have become one of the most common ways people meet potential spouses, but are they consistent with biblical principles? While Scripture never mentions smartphones or dating apps, it offers timeless guidance for relationships, purity and seeking God’s will.

The Bible does not prohibit using technology to meet someone. Instead, it focuses on the character and intentions of those pursuing a relationship.

Proverbs 3:5-6 encourages believers to, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart… and He shall direct your paths.” Christians are called to seek God’s wisdom before entering any romantic relationship, whether the introduction comes through church, friends or an online platform.

The greater concern is not the app itself but how it is used. Dating apps can encourage superficial judgments based on appearance, casual relationships and sexual temptation. Scripture reminds believers to pursue purity and honor God in every aspect of life.

1 Corinthians 6:18 says, “Flee from sexual immorality,” while Philippians 4:8 instructs believers to focus on whatever is true, honorable, pure and praiseworthy.

For Christians seeking marriage, the Bible emphasizes choosing a partner who shares their faith. 2 Corinthians 6:14 warns believers not to be “unequally yoked” with unbelievers, highlighting the importance of spiritual compatibility.

Dating apps can be a useful tool, but they should never replace prayer, biblical discernment or wise counsel. Healthy relationships are built on faith, honesty, respect and commitment—not merely on algorithms or profile pictures.

Ultimately, the goal is not simply finding someone to date but pursuing a relationship that honors God and reflects Christ’s love.
