GREENE COUNTY, Ala. – The death of 23-year-old Karen Deann Hollis is under investigation after friends and family found her remains along Interstate 20/59 days after she disappeared from Northport.
According to AL.com reporter Carol Robinson, Hollis was last seen around midnight on May 8 near 43rd Avenue in Northport. Northport police had said she was believed to be living with a condition that could impair her judgment, and the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency issued a missing person alert.
Investigators later found evidence that led them to suspect foul play. Randall Lendell Dejourney, 44, has been charged with abuse of a corpse.
Court records cited by AL.com say security camera footage showed Dejourney walking with Hollis and later leaving the area of her apartment. The records state he was seen carrying a large tote with a black bag inside.
Hollis’ phone was recovered near I-20/59 westbound at Exit 62 after a Life360 crash notification. Investigators said cell tower data placed Dejourney at Hollis’ apartment and showed movement consistent with her phone’s location data.
On May 16, friends and family found Hollis’ body about 10 to 15 feet off I-20/59 eastbound in Greene County. Authorities said her remains were sent to the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences for an autopsy.
Officials said the investigation remains ongoing, and more charges could follow.
