TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — May 5, 2026 — A late-night police pursuit that stretched across two Alabama counties ended in tragedy after a 20-year-old man died following what authorities describe as a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Officials with the Tuscaloosa Violent Crimes Unit identified the individual as Elyis Kani Taylor, a Tuscaloosa resident. The incident began at approximately 11:40 p.m. Monday, when officers attempted a traffic stop for a violation.
According to investigators, officers reported detecting the odor of suspected illegal drugs and instructed Taylor to exit the vehicle. Instead, he fled the scene, initiating a high-speed chase that reached speeds exceeding 100 miles per hour as it crossed county lines.
The pursuit ended when Taylor crashed his vehicle. Responding officers discovered him with critical injuries, and he was pronounced dead at the scene.
Authorities confirmed that Taylor was in contact with a family member during the chase. According to investigators, he told the relative he had recently been released from jail and did not want to return to custody. The family member reportedly heard what was believed to be a gunshot shortly before the crash.
The Tuscaloosa Violent Crimes Unit continues to investigate the full sequence of events.
