One of HBCU basketball’s most accomplished coaches could soon be making a major move, as reports indicate Chris Wright is set to interview for the vacant head coaching position at Alabama State University.
Wright, who has built a reputation for excellence at both Langston University and Talladega College, is widely respected for leading programs to the NAIA national championship stage. According to The Coaching Carousel, Wright is among the top candidates being considered as Alabama State looks to rebuild its men’s basketball program.
Most recently, Wright guided Langston University to its second NAIA championship game appearance in three seasons. Although the Lions fell short in a narrow 76-71 loss to Freed-Hardeman, the program’s consistent success has solidified Wright’s standing as one of the premier coaches in HBCU basketball.
Before his tenure at Langston, Wright led Talladega College to the 2022 NAIA championship game, further demonstrating his ability to elevate programs and compete at the highest level.
With 16 years of head coaching experience, Wright boasts an impressive overall record of 332 wins and 121 losses. His time at Langston has been particularly dominant, with a remarkable 121-21 record that reflects both strong leadership and player development.
Alabama State is currently searching for a new head coach following the resignation of Tony Madlock, who departed to rejoin Penny Hardaway’s staff at the University of Memphis.
For Alabama State and the SWAC, the potential addition of a proven winner like Wright could bring renewed energy and competitiveness to the program. As the process unfolds, many will be watching closely to see if this championship-caliber coach takes the next step in his career.
