MONTGOMERY — Holiday spirit is taking root in the Capital City as Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT) workers bring one of the state’s most beloved traditions to life. Governor Kay Ivey visited the State Capitol steps on Thursday to thank the crews responsible for raising and preparing the official state Christmas tree ahead of Friday’s annual lighting ceremony.

For ALDOT’s workforce, transforming the Capitol grounds each year is a labor of pride and community service. These skilled employees guide the towering evergreen into place, secure its trunk, and painstakingly string thousands of lights to create the festive scene that families across Alabama look forward to each Christmas season.

“I’m liking what I’m seeing – and it’s all thanks to the hardworking ALDOT crews who bring this Christmas tradition to life,” Governor Ivey said. “Their dedication helps set the tone for a joyful season at the State Capitol.”

This year’s tree — a 38-foot Eastern Red Cedar donated by the Allen family of Fitzpatrick — arrived Monday under a blue-light escort. Once the tree reached the Capitol, crews immediately began centering, leveling and securing it before the week-long decorating process began.

Workers are illuminating the evergreen with more than 40,000 white lights, 67 county stars and handcrafted ornaments provided by the Garden Club of Alabama. The theme, “Every Light a Prayer for Peace,” symbolizes unity and hope across the state.

The Capitol Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony will be held Friday, December 5, at 5:30 p.m., with pre-program music at 5 p.m. by the 151st Army National Guard Band. Remarks will be delivered by Governor Ivey, Rev. John O. Blount and Lieutenant General Daniel Tulley. Alabama native and American Idol finalist Walker Burroughs will perform before Ivey leads the traditional countdown to light the tree.
