A 75-year-old man reportedly brandishing a replica of a real handgun was shot by Opelika police over the weekend.
The man was not seriously injured and later jailed.
Opelika police were dispatched shortly after 9:30 p.m. Saturday to a report of a domestic dispute in the 1300 block of South Long Street.
When officers arrived, they encountered a man with what was believed to be a handgun, said ALEA Lt. Jeremy Burkett.
“Subsequently, one of the officers fired their weapon, striking the suspect,” Burkett said.
Opelika police said the man – identified as Charles Winston – was shot in the leg.
Winston was taken to Piedmont Columbus Regional Hospital. No officers were injured.
After Winston was treated, he was booked into the Lee County Jail on two domestic violence charges.
Burkett said the investigation showed that Winston was armed with a full-sized replica of a Beretta 9 mm semiautomatic handgun.
The State Bureau of Investigation is leading the probe into the officer-involved shooting.
Once complete, the findings will be turned over to the Lee County District Attorney’s Office.
