The month of April began with an ending. Each year, Oakwood University holds its homecoming weekend during the Easter holiday, so this year, the festivities that began on Thursday, March 29 with the 40th Annual UNCF Education Gala featuring award winning singer/musician Oleta Adams and band, ended on Sunday, April 1 with a day of fellowship, food and fun on the campus. As usual, there was a huge gathering of alumni, current students, administrators, faculty, staff, family and friends of the 122 year old of HBCU throughout the busy weekend that included dedication ceremonies, choir festivals, worship and multi-award winning gospel music artist Kirk Franklin in concert at the VBC.

April 1 also marked the start of the 2018 Love Hunt, a two week scavenger hunt and social initiative focused on mental well-being. For two weeks (April 1st-14th 2018) participants were encouraged to complete small challenges, like writing a list of things they are grateful for, forgiving someone who hurt them, or completing some physical activity. Additionally, they were given clues that helped to locate gifts hidden by 57 North Hampton, a local non-profit organization that encourages participants to take steps towards improving their mental health while removing the negative sigma surrounding mental health and encouraging meaningful dialogue on the topic.

April 4 marked the 50th anniversary of the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and we could all benefit from experiencing and showing more love.

It’s official! My sister Jacquelyn Anderson and I have wondered out loud for some time about creating an opportunity to work on the radio together. I’ve been on the air for almost 28 years, but my sister has been at it longer. She is a seasoned pro and on air personality who currently serves as music director and host of Midday Jazz on WJAB 90.9 FM. On Monday, March 5, we launched a weekly segment called “City Rhythms” where I join Jackie on Mondays at 11:30 am to share information about diverse activities and initiatives that reflect the vibe of the city. Thus far, we’ve had a chance to share a lot of information about what’s going on in the city. I hope that you will join us for this informative segment highlighting the range of citywide activities.

April is Fair Housing Month, and on Saturday, April 7, Bancorp South hosted a Homebuyer Seminar at the Embrace Center located at 3220 Lodge Road in Huntsville. Conference attendees learned: how to build/repair your credit score, what incentives are available to homebuyers, what programs are available to Veterans & special needs buyers, the home buying process from start to finish, the roles of real estate agents and lenders in the home buying process, how much can you afford on your present income, the importance of a home inspection and home maintenance, and the need for mortgage insurance and home insurance and their difference. Complimentary refreshments was served.
