ANTHONY JONES OUT AT ECSU

Elizabeth City State Athletics Director George Bright announced Monday evening that the school had parted ways with fourth-year head coach Anthony Jones.

Jones, the former successful coach at Alabama A&M in the SWAC, had led the Vikings since tak- ing over the program in August 2018.

His team posted a 3-7 record this year with a 3-4 mark in CIAA play. His three-year record leading ECSU was 6-23 overall. ECSU and the CIAA did not play in the 2020 sea- son because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Vikings closed out the season Saturday with a 79-6 loss to CIAA North Division champion Bowie State. Assistant football coach Nick Sanders will handle recruiting operations until a head coach is named.

Jones compiled a 82-54 record and won a SWAC championship in 2006 while leading Alabama A&m from 2002 to 2013. Jones, a Wichita State graduate, played five years in the NFL with the Washington franchise.
