Hyundai plans approximately $500 million in Alabama investment to support Tucson Hybrid production, new engines, and advanced powertrain manufacturing.

MONTGOMERY — Hyundai’s plans to expand North American manufacturing include approximately $500 million in Alabama investment to support hybrid vehicles, engines, and advanced powertrains.

An Oct. 12 Business Alabama report highlighted the company’s broader goal of adding 500,000 vehicles to annual North American production capacity. That regional target includes multiple manufacturing operations and does not represent an announced increase of 500,000 vehicles at the Montgomery plant alone.

According to industry reporting, the Alabama investment would support production of the Tucson Hybrid, new engines and hybrid components, and extended-range electric vehicle powertrains.

Hyundai President and CEO José Muñoz outlined the investment during the Automotive News Congress in Detroit. The company plans to move production of the U.S.-market Tucson Hybrid from South Korea to Alabama, according to reporting on his remarks.

The strategy also includes a Santa Fe extended-range electric vehicle, with production scheduled for the first half of 2027, according to Thomasnet.

Hyundai’s broader manufacturing plan calls for increasing North American parts sourcing from approximately 60% to 80% by 2030. The Alabama upgrades form part of that effort to build more vehicles and components closer to customers.
