U.S. Sen. Katie Britt highlighted $2 million in federal funding for Southern Research laboratory infrastructure and equipment. The Birmingham nonprofit previously announced the award in February.

BIRMINGHAM — Southern Research plans to strengthen its laboratory equipment and scientific capabilities with $2 million in federal funding secured through U.S. Sen. Katie Britt.

Britt’s office highlighted the investment in an Oct. 9 announcement, explaining that the funding comes through fiscal year 2026 appropriations supporting labor, health, education and related programs. Southern Research previously announced the award in February.

The money will support laboratory infrastructure and equipment, including advanced imaging, chemistry, pathology, and bioanalytical sciences, according to the senator’s office.

“I’m proud to secure $2 million in funding for Southern Research to expand its biotechnology research equipment and capabilities,” Britt said.

The Birmingham nonprofit said the upgrades will help researchers evaluate a broader range of potential therapies and move promising scientific concepts forward.

Founded in 1941, Southern Research has worked on cancer, infectious diseases, and other illnesses. Its February announcement described the equipment improvements as part of a strategic plan to expand its scientific reach over five years.

Southern Research officials also expect the investment to support skilled employment and strengthen Alabama’s biotechnology sector. The organization described those anticipated benefits; the announcements did not provide a specific new-job total.

The institute’s award is part of more than $28 million in Alabama funding Britt’s office said she secured through the fiscal year 2026 appropriations measure.
