HUNTSVILLE, Ala. — Progressive Union Missionary Baptist Church placed character, accountability, and spiritual endurance at the center of its 2026 Men’s Day observance on Sunday, Aug. 23.
Bishop Manuell Smith IV, pastor of Sunlight Missionary Baptist Church in Eastaboga, served as guest preacher for the 10 a.m. worship service at Progressive Union, located at 1919 Brandontown Road. His message, “The Danger of Winning Publicly While Losing Privately,” challenged men to measure success by more than recognition, position, or outward achievement.
Drawing from 1 Samuel 30:6, Smith directed attention to David during one of the most painful moments of his leadership. After returning to Ziklag and discovering that the city had been burned and the families taken captive, David faced deep grief and anger from his own men. Scripture records that he “encouraged himself in the Lord his God.”
The passage supported the service’s larger call for men to remain spiritually grounded when their private struggles do not match their public appearance. The message encouraged honest self-examination in areas including faith, family, personal integrity, and emotional well-being.
Men’s Day also created space for fellowship across generations, bringing together fathers, sons, brothers, mentors and friends. Progressive Union invited men throughout the Huntsville community to participate, emphasizing that strength includes seeking God, accepting responsibility, and supporting one another.
Under the leadership of Pastor Dion J. Watkins, Progressive Union continues to offer worship, Christian education, and community-centered ministry. The Men’s Day service reinforced a timely lesson: public victories cannot replace spiritual health, healthy relationships, and private faithfulness. True success, the message suggested, begins with becoming whole where the public may never see.
