HUNTSVILLE, Ala. — Huntsville’s school resource officers do much more than enforce laws. They also serve as mentors, problem-solvers and trusted adults committed to helping students feel safe and supported.

The Huntsville Police Department partners with Huntsville City Schools to place officers on campuses throughout the district. While safety remains their primary responsibility, SROs also build relationships with students and work closely with teachers, families and administrators.

HPD Sgt. Scott Trew said a common misconception is that school resource officers are present only to discipline students. Many officers interact with the same young people every day for several years, giving them opportunities to establish trust before problems arise.

By walking the hallways, attending school activities, answering questions and listening to concerns, SROs become familiar faces whom students can approach for guidance.

Officers also assist with emergency planning, identify potential safety concerns and respond to situations that could disrupt school operations. Their presence allows educators to focus on teaching while trained officers remain available when needed.

HPD Chief Kirk Giles described school safety as a shared responsibility. Huntsville City Schools officials also praised SROs for serving as dependable mentors and positive role models.

Trew encourages students to introduce themselves to their school resource officers. Stronger relationships among officers, students and staff, he said, help build safer and more supportive campuses.
