BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — A former Birmingham police officer is being held without bond after a Jefferson County judge ruled that prosecutors presented sufficient evidence to move forward with serious child sex crime charges.
Gregory Thompson, 38, is charged with first-degree rape, traveling to meet a child for an unlawful sex act, and first-degree sexual abuse. Thompson, who joined the Birmingham Police Department in 2018, resigned shortly before his arrest.
According to court testimony, Thompson first met the 14-year-old girl earlier this year while responding to a call for service at her home while on duty. Investigators allege he later obtained the girl’s contact information and began communicating with her.
Prosecutors said Thompson picked up the teen on March 28, took her to purchase food and vaping products, and then drove her to his home, where his mother was in another room. Authorities allege the sexual assault occurred inside the residence.
Investigators testified that Thompson admitted to sexual contact with the juvenile but denied the rape allegation.
Following an Aniah’s Law hearing, Jefferson County Circuit Judge Shanta Owens denied bond on the rape charge, finding prosecutors had shown by clear and convincing evidence that no release conditions would adequately protect the community or ensure Thompson’s appearance in court. The judge also ruled there was sufficient evidence for the case to be presented to a grand jury.
The investigation remains ongoing, and the charges are allegations. Thompson is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court.
