NORTH ALABAMA — Summer may be winding down, but North Alabama is heating up with festivals that celebrate everything from music and farming to dragon boat racing, watermelons and one-of-a-kind shopping adventures.
Treasure hunters can kick off the month at the World’s Longest Yard Sale from Aug. 6-9, where more than 690 miles of vendors stretch through six states, including the scenic Lookout Mountain Parkway in Northeast Alabama. Shoppers will discover antiques, handcrafted goods, fresh produce and local food while enjoying breathtaking mountain views.
Also on Aug. 7-8, the Piney Chapel American Farm Heritage Days in Athens will showcase antique tractors, vintage farm equipment, craft vendors, family activities and a downtown tractor parade celebrating Alabama’s agricultural roots.
Water lovers can head to Scottsboro on Aug. 8 for the Dragon Boat Race and Festival at Goose Pond Colony Marina. The event features colorful 46-foot dragon boat races, food trucks, live entertainment and children’s activities while raising funds for local charities.
The Franklin County Watermelon Festival returns to Russellville on Aug. 14-15, offering free watermelon, seed-spitting contests, arts and crafts, classic cars and concerts by Maggie Baugh and country star Tracy Byrd.
Music lovers can close out the month at the inaugural SkyDog: The Shoals Experience, Aug. 28-30 in Florence. The three-day celebration honors the rich musical legacy of The Shoals with concerts, storytelling, film screenings and exclusive museum experiences.
