These 7 Summer Drinks Pack a Shocking Amount of Sugar, Experts Warn

By SPEAKIN’ OUT NEWS

Many popular summer beverages contain surprisingly high amounts of sugar and calories. Health experts say replacing sugary drinks with water, unsweetened tea, or lower-sugar alternatives can improve hydration and support better overall health.

Summer is the season for icy beverages, but health experts say many popular drinks contain enough sugar to derail weight-loss goals and increase the risk of obesity, diabetes, and heart disease.

Research published in the journal Obesity found that sugary beverages account for more than 20% of the average American’s daily calories, while other studies have linked added sugar to weight gain. The good news: Replacing high-calorie drinks with healthier alternatives can have a greater impact on weight loss than simply eating less.

Among the biggest offenders are Cold Stone Creamery’s Oh Fudge! Shake, which contains 1,250 calories and 127 grams of sugar, and Smoothie King’s The Activator Strawberry, packing 834 calories and 134 grams of sugar.

Other sugar-loaded choices include Dairy Queen’s Caramel MooLatte, Orange Julius Lemon Julius, SoBe Energize Green Tea, Sunkist soda, and Vitaminwater Multi-V.

Nutrition experts recommend choosing lower-sugar alternatives such as plain water, sparkling water, unsweetened tea, or beverages made with real fruit and no added sugar. Even when enjoying smoothies or milkshakes, smaller portions and sharing with a friend can help reduce sugar intake.

Water remains the healthiest choice for staying hydrated during hot summer weather. Experts recommend drinking eight to 10 glasses daily, especially when spending time outdoors.

Making simple beverage swaps can reduce hundreds of unnecessary calories each day and help support a healthier weight while keeping you refreshed throughout the summer.
