Museum to offer free admission for Independence Day

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Huntsville, Ala – The Huntsville Museum of Art (HMA) will offer free admission to all guests on Saturday, July 4 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The Betsy and Peter Lowe Community Free Day will celebrate America’s 250th and kick off a new exhibition: Coming Home.

The free day is in honor of Betsy and Peter Lowe for their invaluable support of HMA. The event provides a great opportunity for guests and their families to view the wide range of exhibitions currently on display, from captivating artworks by regionally and nationally acclaimed artists in addition to our new installation, A Beautiful Despair: Anila Quayyum Agha, Extinct in the Wild and American Art Galleries.

“The Betsy and Peter Lowe Community Free Day is one of our favorite traditions because it ensures everyone has the opportunity to experience the power of art,” said Christopher Madkour, executive director of the Huntsville Museum of Art. “As our nation begins celebrating America’s 250th anniversary, we’re proud to welcome our community to explore Coming Home alongside our American Art Galleries andother exhibitions that reflect the stories, history, and creativity that connect us.”

Coming Home, on display in the Grisham gallery, showcases a story that home is not always a fixed place. Through color, texture, and narrative – working across painting, photography, and mixed media – LeXander Bryant, Jahni Moore, and Toyin Ojih Odutola explore how identity and place are intertwined, bringing a distinct perspective to the idea of home.

Fromhistoric to contemporary, this delicate balance of Extinct in the Wild reveals the tension between admiration for the natural world and the consequences of its exploitation. The exhibition includes prints from the John James Audubon Viviparous Quadrupeds of North America series, a landmark work in 19th-century natural history. The works offer a unique look at North America’s wildlife heritage through the eyes of a legendary naturalist and artist.

American Art Galleries spans nearly 250 years of American artistic expression. As the United States celebrates the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence, these galleries offer an opportunity to reflect on the evolving story of American art. Telling Tales: Scenes of American Life shows artists in the nineteenth century that turned to genre painting. These scenes capture moments of everyday life.

As a bonus, the HMA Store located in the museum’s lobby will offer 10% off purchases throughout the day.
