Beverly Sasberry, a 64-year-old Jacksonville woman, is facing felony animal cruelty charges after police say she intentionally drove over 11 ducklings because she was upset, they had made a mess near her home.
According to the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office, the disturbing incident involved Sasberry driving a red Honda Accord through a neighborhood street where a mother duck and her ducklings were gathered. Investigators allege Sasberry initially struck the ducklings, then turned her vehicle around multiple times and drove back over the same area again.
Authorities said surveillance footage captured the aftermath, showing several ducklings dead in the roadway while the mother duck and two surviving ducklings attempted to flee from the vehicle.
Police later questioned Sasberry about the incident. According to investigators, she admitted she became angry because the ducks had been leaving droppings in her yard and acknowledged that she intentionally ran over the animals.
The shocking case has sparked outrage online, with many residents and animal advocates condemning the alleged actions as cruel and unnecessary. Social media users have also called for stricter penalties in animal abuse cases involving intentional harm.
Sasberry was arrested and charged with 11 counts of felony animal cruelty. Authorities have not released additional information regarding future court appearances or whether she has retained an attorney.
Animal cruelty laws in Florida allow felony charges when investigators believe animals were intentionally tortured, injured, or killed.
