‘She Was Just Going to Her Car’: New Details Emerge in Shocking Alabama Hospital Killing

(LEFT – RIGHT): Authorities charged Matthew James Taylor with capital murder in connection with the deadly hospital parking lot shooting. Nurse Ada Doss was fatally shot outside DCH Regional Medical Center in Tuscaloosa after completing her shift.

New details have emerged in the tragic killing of Ada Doss, a 27-year-old nurse and mother who was shot to death during an alleged robbery outside DCH Regional Medical Center earlier this month. 

Authorities say Matthew James Taylor, 41, has been charged with capital murder in the May 12 shooting that occurred as Doss finished her work shift and walked to her vehicle in the hospital parking lot. 

According to investigators, Taylor had been dropped off at the hospital nearly two hours earlier after reportedly appearing to be in a mental health crisis. Hospital officials said Taylor never entered the medical facility and was not a patient. Staff members searched for him after a woman alerted emergency room personnel member that a man outside needed help, but officials said he had already walked away. 

Charging documents state Taylor first attempted to rob another woman before approaching Doss with a handgun and demanding her car keys. Authorities said Doss continued walking toward her vehicle before Taylor allegedly shot her once and stole items from her belongings. 

Hospital officials said Taylor was arrested less than eight minutes after the shooting. In response to the tragedy, DCH officials announced increased security measures, including additional officers, upgraded lighting, fencing, and expanded surveillance systems. 

Doss leaves behind a husband and two young daughters. Her husband described her as “the best mama to our girls” in an emotional social media tribute that has touched thousands across Alabama.
