Mobile is replacing its former Civic Center with a new $300 million entertainment arena expected to open in 2027.

MOBILE, Ala. — Mobile is betting big on downtown’s future with plans to replace the former Mobile Civic Center with a new $300 million entertainment arena designed to bring major events, concerts, and sports back to the heart of the city.

The old Civic Center, which opened in 1964, was long used for concerts, sporting events, Mardi Gras activities, trade shows, and community gatherings. Demolition of the aging arena, expo hall, and theater began in 2024 to make room for a modern facility expected to open in 2027.

City leaders see the project as more than a building replacement. The new arena is expected to become a downtown economic engine, drawing visitors who spend money at restaurants, hotels, shops, and nearby entertainment venues.

Plans call for a flexible venue with modern seating, premium areas, and improved event space. Reports say the facility is expected to host concerts, live performances, professional hockey games, ice skating shows, and other large events, with a capacity of roughly 10,000 spectators, depending on the event setup.

For Mobile, the rebuild comes at a time when cities across the South are investing heavily in entertainment districts and downtown attractions. Supporters say the new arena could help Mobile compete for events that previously bypassed the city because of outdated facilities.

The project also carries symbolic weight. For generations, the Civic Center was part of Mobile’s public life. Now, city officials hope its replacement will help write a new chapter for downtown growth.
