This Daily Habit May Help Slow Aging, Study Finds

An older couple shares daily supplements, reflecting research suggesting multivitamins may help slow biological aging when used consistently over time.

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. — A daily multivitamin—long considered a simple nutritional safety net—may offer a surprising benefit: helping slow the body’s biological aging process.

New research published in Nature Medicine suggests that consistent multivitamin use could modestly slow cellular aging. The findings come from the COSMOS (Cocoa Supplement and Multivitamin Outcomes Study), a large clinical trial examining the long-term effects of supplements on health.

Understanding Biological Aging

While chronological age reflects the number of years lived, biological age measures how well the body’s systems are functioning. Researchers tracked this using blood samples and advanced “epigenetic clocks,” which detect changes in DNA linked to aging.

In the study, nearly 1,000 older adults were randomly assigned to take a daily multivitamin, cocoa extract, both, or a placebo over two years. Those taking the multivitamin showed a measurable slowing of biological aging—equivalent to about four months less aging compared to the placebo group.

Who Benefits Most?

The strongest effects were seen in participants whose biological age exceeded their actual age, suggesting multivitamins may help those experiencing higher levels of physiological stress or nutritional gaps.

Researchers found no significant aging benefit from cocoa extract alone.

What It Means for You

Experts caution that multivitamins are not a cure-all but may support overall health when combined with a balanced diet, regular exercise, and quality sleep.

As interest grows in extending “healthspan”—the years we live in good health—this study highlights a simple, accessible habit that could make a meaningful difference.

A daily multivitamin may not stop time—but it could help your body age more gracefully.
