ONE WOMAN’S OPINION

Jackie Reed Columnist

Thanks to Speakin Out News and to our many dedicated readers.  This was a great Memorial Day weekend as the people were out shopping, grilling out and traveling. All seem to be happy as many things are getting back to normal.  I went to the river last weekend with my family, and we had a great time.  My son has a boat, and they love going out on the water.

 GRADUATIONS

So happy to see graduation happening for the students.  I had a lot of kin graduating and the Smother’s family had several too.  Though some students believe that schoolwork is hard, they will come to realize these are some of the best years in their life and worth the time.  Congratulations to all the graduating students and I wish you all great success in life.

POLITICS

It is concerning that the government officials are discussing using Pensions, Social Security, and many other government funds of the working people for things other than the things that were intended for.  Why do our leaders always go in the wrong direction and not try to help the citizens instead of taking their money for other uses?  It seems Politicians are bad at helping the people, and many of the people do not know what their politicians vote for, and some do not really care.

JOE DAVIS STADIUM

Glad to see the Joe Davis Stadium getting back in business as it has been sitting empty for many years.  Two years ago, there was talk of either putting $8M into restoring the stadium or demolishing it.  Now the former Huntsville Stars stadium is getting an $18 million dollar facelift.  There are talks about luring a professional minor league soccer team to play in Joe Davis Stadium.  The City Administrator John Hamilton told the council the team would have local ownership and the city is working with the team in making upgrades to the 36-year-old stadium.

SKYBRIDGE OVER PARKWAY

The city is seeking grant money for the Huntsville infrastructure project which is back again and will not go away.  A Skybridge for pedestrians is being proposed to span over Memorial Parkway that currently serves a barrier between downtown residences on the west side and the jobs district on the east side.  An S-shape design of about 6,000 linear feet with trusses would cross the parkway from the under-construction Constellation development at Clinton Avenue and continue to cross Governors Drive to connect Lowe Mill to the downtown area.

DEVELOPMENT IN CITY

Why do our leaders never form meetings for the residents of Huntsville, such as Seniors, Young Professional’s, and other local groups to help with the planning of this city?  Having been in meetings for over 30 years with different Mayors and City Council members it has been a trip to watch the leaders operate. What are the next big development plans and in what areas, and who will they be moving next for the developers?

Love you all and have a blessed week.
