One Woman’s Opinion

Jackie Reed, Columnist

Thanks, Speakin Out News and to our many dedicated readers. Thanks to William Smothers for being so good to me over the years. I pray that I have enough time to pay him back some way before my time is up. God has been good to me and my family over the years and I have not thanked him enough for that either.

God made us all and HE will be the one to take us all. It’s hard to believe how people living today do not know right from wrong. So much is happening in this old world today and it is a shame we cannot get along and appreciate history and the historical people we have known for years. Prayers for everyone that they find Love in their hearts instead of hate. No, I am not a preacher but God gave me love for everyone and that makes me happy.

CITY ELECTIONS –AUGUST 25, 2020
Can you believe it is time for another election in the city? These four years have passed fast and you need to know who is running for office. Two City Council members, Devyn Keith, and Will Culver and Mayor Tommy Battle, are all up for re-election. There are several people running for City Council and 4 for Mayor. The salaries for these positions are good since they all voted to give themselves a big raise this year and only gave the other City employees a 1% raise. Please study the candidates and their political platforms, qualifications and views and go vote on AUGUST 25,2020 as it is important to us all.

REPORT OF INVESTORS
A New York based private equity firm has offered to buy JC Penny with plans to merge with Belk according to the New York Times. Sycamore Partners offered $1.75 billion to buy JC Penny out of bankruptcy. Two other companies have also given similar offers. Sycamore Partners would brand some of the JC Penny stores as Belk and close the others.

STONE MIDDLE SCHOOL
When Stone Middle School sold for $1.1 Million, the School Board was asking $5.5 Million for it. The school properties were stolen in my opinion as the School Superintendent played politics with the city. That is over but now the City of Huntsville bought 4 acres between the two buildings and I was told by a very informed individual that the city is mowing and mulching the properties. Were these 4acres bought for good reason and could someone tell the public why?

They are building another Bridge Street at the old Martin Stove place stretching all the way to 14th street at the top of the hill. WHO ARE THE PLANNERS FOR OUR CITY? I am not happy as no Common Sense is being used and the public is not being informed or involved in these decisions. Look at the big Hotels and parking garages being built to help the developers like the one at the old Times Building downtown. You would be surprised as to owns these properties and how our City leaders are giving our city property away for 50 years for a $100.00 month. Who wants Huntsville to become a big city with big buildings? Not me.

SCHOOLS
Will the schools open as many are still worried as what to do? Will all the teachers and student all be wearing face mask and practicing safe distancing? Who will enforce these rules as it is going to be a big job for the teachers as it is. Love you all and have a blessed week.
