A former Texas A&M football standout has been arrested after authorities say his 2-year-old son accidentally shot himself with a loaded handgun that had been left within the child’s reach inside the family’s Louisiana apartment.
According to Baton Rouge police, Le’Veon Moss, 23, told investigators he had placed a loaded firearm beneath a pillow in his bedroom before going upstairs with his girlfriend. While the adults were on another floor, the toddler reportedly found the weapon and accidentally fired it.
The child was rushed by his parents in a private vehicle to Our Lady of the Lake Children’s Hospital with a gunshot wound. Authorities have not released an update on the boy’s condition.
Investigators charged Moss with one felony count of cruelty to juveniles, alleging his negligence caused the child to suffer serious injuries. He was booked into the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison, where his bond was set at $25,000.
A Baton Rouge native, Moss starred at Istrouma High School before becoming one of Texas A&M’s top running backs. During four seasons with the Aggies, he rushed for 1,767 yards and 22 touchdowns, earning Second-Team All-SEC honors in 2024 despite battling major knee and ankle injuries.
After going undrafted in the 2026 NFL Draft, Moss signed with the Miami Dolphins as an undrafted free agent. However, he retired from professional football less than a month later.
The case serves as another tragic reminder of the dangers unsecured firearms can pose to children. Law enforcement officials continue to urge gun owners to keep firearms unloaded, locked away and stored separately from ammunition to help prevent accidental shootings involving young children.
