WASHINGTON — Former President Barack Obama recently joked that he has “a room”—and even “a suite”—in President Donald Trump’s head, a remark he made during a June 24 appearance on the “All the Smoke” podcast. Obama described Trump’s continued focus on him as “an obsession,” renewing attention to a political rivalry that has spanned more than a decade.
For years, Trump has repeatedly targeted the nation’s first Black president with conspiracy theories, personal insults, and inflammatory rhetoric. Trump became the leading promoter of the false “birther” claim questioning Obama’s birthplace despite official records confirming he was born in Hawaii.
Trump also questioned Obama’s college records, falsely accused him of ordering surveillance of Trump Tower, claimed Obama was the “founder of ISIS,” criticized his vacations and golf outings, and has more recently accused the former president of treason without publicly presenting evidence.
The latest controversy involves AI-generated images and videos shared through Trump’s social media accounts. One post depicting Barack and Michelle Obama as apes drew widespread condemnation before being deleted. Another manipulated video portrayed Obama being arrested. Critics argued the posts crossed the line from political criticism into racially charged imagery and misinformation.
Obama has largely responded with humor. During the podcast, he said Trump’s continued focus on him was “a strange thing,” adding that Trump seemed to have “a suite” in his head reserved for the former president.
The exchange has renewed debate over race, political rhetoric, and the growing use of artificial intelligence in political messaging. It also underscores how the relationship between the two leaders continues to shape national political conversations years after Obama left the White House.
