If you’re trying to lose weight or simply eat healthier, nutrition experts say choosing foods that are low in calories but high in nutrients can help you stay full without adding excess calories.
Often called “zero-calorie foods,” these fruits and vegetables aren’t truly calorie-free. Instead, they contain so few calories—and so much water and fiber—that your body uses a significant amount of energy to digest them.
Among the healthiest options are cucumbers, celery, tomatoes, cauliflower, mushrooms, asparagus, watermelon, red bell peppers, summer squash, apricots, turnips, kelp and red chili peppers.
Many of these foods provide important vitamins, minerals and antioxidants while supporting heart health, digestion and immune function.
For example, watermelon is rich in water and the amino acid citrulline, red bell peppers are loaded with vitamins A and C, and mushrooms contain compounds that may support immune health. Cauliflower offers a lower-carbohydrate alternative to mashed potatoes, while celery and cucumbers make satisfying snacks because of their high water content.
Nutritionists say these foods work best as part of a balanced eating plan that includes lean proteins, whole grains and regular physical activity.
While no single food causes weight loss on its own, replacing higher-calorie snacks with nutrient-rich fruits and vegetables can help reduce overall calorie intake and improve long-term health.
Before making major dietary changes, individuals with chronic health conditions should consult their healthcare provider or a registered dietitian.
