Before you spend your spare change this Fourth of July, take a closer look. One special quarter could be worth a $2,500 reward.
The Numismatic Guaranty Company (NGC) is offering a $2,500 cash reward to the first eligible paid member who submits one of the rare 2026 Declaration of Independence quarters featuring the special “July 4th” privy mark for grading.
The limited-edition coin is part of the U.S. Mint’s celebration of America’s 250th anniversary. Only 250,000 of the commemorative quarters are being released nationwide, and unlike most collector coins, they are being placed into everyday circulation through banks and other financial institutions. That means anyone could receive one in pocket change.
Collectors can identify the rare quarter by looking for the “July 4th” privy mark near Thomas Jefferson’s portrait on the front of the coin. The special edition also does not carry a traditional mint mark, making it easier to distinguish from standard quarters.
To qualify for the reward, the coin must be submitted by an NGC paid member, with memberships beginning at $39 per year. The company said the first qualifying submission will receive the $2,500 reward, and the graded coin will be returned to its owner. The reward is not an offer to purchase the coin.
Whether you’re a serious coin collector or simply checking the change in your wallet, this Independence Day could turn an ordinary quarter into an extraordinary payday.
