SPEAKIN’ OUT NEWS

The Decatur Police Department is offering a free women’s firearm safety course this summer as interest in personal protection and responsible gun ownership continues growing across Alabama.
The program, called “Women with Weapons,” will provide hands-on firearm safety education for women ages 21 and older. Training sessions will take place on June 20, June 27, and July 11 from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. at the Decatur Police Department firearms range located at 1242 N. Seneca Drive in Trinity.
Police officials say the course is designed for women of all experience levels, including beginners with little or no prior firearm knowledge. The initiative focuses on safe firearm handling, storage practices, maintenance, and situational awareness.
The classes will cover:
- handgun safety
- firearm storage
- cleaning and maintenance
- shooting fundamentals
According to organizers, handguns will be available for participants who do not own firearms, and eye and ear protection will also be provided during training exercises.
Law enforcement officials say firearm education remains one of the most important tools in preventing accidental shootings and promoting responsible gun ownership.
The initiative comes as more women nationwide are enrolling in self-defense and firearm training programs focused on personal safety and empowerment.
Decatur police say seating for the course is limited, and community members are encouraged to register early once final enrollment information is released.
The program is part of broader outreach efforts aimed at strengthening public safety education and building positive community relationships across North Alabama.
