Four North Alabama teachers face felony sex crime charges in April — two from the same school district

Discovery Middle School in Madison and Journey Middle School are both operated by Madison City Schools, whose Superintendent, Dr. Ed Nichols, issued statements following two separate teacher arrests in April 2026. Two additional North Alabama teachers — one from Ardmore High School, one from Cold Springs High School — also face felony sex crime charges and child abuse this month.

NORTH ALABAMA — Four teachers across Madison County and North Alabama are facing felony sex crime charges following a series of arrests and indictments in April 2026 — a pattern that has sent shockwaves through local school communities and raised urgent questions about student safety and educator oversight.

In the most recent case, Gilford Kibler Jr., a Career and Technical Education teacher at Discovery Middle School in Madison, was arrested Monday, April 27, on a felony charge of school employee sexual contact with a student under the age of 19. The Madison Police Department conducted the investigation in partnership with Madison City Schools. Kibler is being held in the Madison County Jail on a $20,000 bond. State records show Kibler received his Alabama teaching certificate in late 2025 and had a background check performed earlier this year. He previously taught in Texas, where records showed he was in good standing.

Eleven days earlier, on April 16, another Madison City Schools teacher was arrested. Logan Thomas, 32, a Journey Middle School teacher who had been with the district since 2020, was booked on 10 counts of possession of child sexual abuse material with intent to disseminate and one count of electronic solicitation of a child. The arrest followed a search warrant served at his home and was a joint investigation involving the ICAC Task Force, the FBI, Homeland Security Investigations, the State Bureau of Investigation, and multiple local law enforcement agencies. Thomas was initially booked into the Limestone County Jail on a $330,000 bond. On April 21, his attorneys requested a bond reduction, citing inability to pay; a hearing has been set for May 19.

Madison City Schools Superintendent Dr. Ed Nichols issued statements following both arrests. In each case, the district placed the teacher on immediate administrative leave and pledged full cooperation with investigators. “The safety and well-being of our students is our highest priority,” Nichols said following the Thomas arrest. “We encourage any student or parent with information to assist the investigation to contact the Madison Police Department.”

Meanwhile, in Limestone County, a Madison County grand jury indicted former Ardmore High School teacher Nicholas Murphy on April 15 for a school employee engaging in a sex act with a student, disseminating obscene material, and distributing obscene material to a student. Murphy — who also served as a church music director at the time of his 2025 arrest — has not yet had an arraignment date set.

And in Cullman County, former Cold Springs High School girls basketball coach Paige Parker Adams, 35, was indicted on 32 counts, including deviant sexual intercourse with a student, sexual contact with a student under 19, and 30 counts of distributing obscene material to a student. Adams resigned on March 25 after school leaders received a complaint. Cullman County District Attorney Champ Crocker said, “This 32-count grand jury indictment speaks for itself.”

All suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
