Braids Out, Time Back: Black Entrepreneur Launches Braid-Removal App

By SPEAKIN’ OUT NEWS

Kellie Brooks, founder of Take Down Braids, developed the platform after experiencing the time demands of removing her own braids.

For women who wear braids, getting a new hairstyle often begins with a time-consuming chore: taking the old one down. Entrepreneur Kellie Brooks hopes to make that process easier with Take Down Braids, an app that connects customers with braid- and extension-removal providers.

According to a company announcement published by BlackNews.com, the platform connects clients with workers called “Unbraiders,” who travel to customers and accept appointments based on their availability.

Brooks said her own experience inspired the business. She sometimes removed only part of her braids to keep a presentable hairstyle while balancing work and other responsibilities.

The app applies an on-demand service model to a beauty routine that can consume hours. Customers request assistance, while participating Unbraiders choose appointments that fit their schedules.

The company also promotes the platform as an opportunity to earn supplemental income. It says providers can potentially earn $100 for a takedown, depending on the service. That figure reflects a company earnings claim, not guaranteed pay.

Prospective Unbraiders must complete a $32 background check and required orientation covering procedures, expectations, and safety, according to the announcement. The company says participation does not require a cosmetology license, subject to applicable local regulations.

Take Down Braids is prioritizing provider recruitment before expanding customer promotion in individual markets. The announcement does not establish whether appointments are currently available in Huntsville or elsewhere in North Alabama.

Brooks’ goal is to connect people seeking help with a lengthy hair-care task to those willing to provide it. The company lists Apple and Android apps and directs prospective customers and providers to TakeDownBraids.com for information.
